Several chain partners and STOWA (the Dutch waterboards' knowledge institute) recognized the potential of Spodofos. During early development, up to TRL5, they invested in the Spodofos process to complete critical development steps in order to demonstrate its viability.
Development took place under permit at the site of GMB BioEnergie in the Netherlands. As the result of this cooperation, in 2024 all foreseen critical process issues were resolved successfully. Prototype components for the pilot plant have been manufactured.
This progress was made possible with in-kind assistance of a Gouda Refractories and Urban Mine, a Dutch sustainable concrete producer.
For all details up to TRL5, refer to the STOWA 2025-16 report (tab links).
Development of prototypes and pilot plant erection is funded by the Province of Gelderland. Design and construction was in close collaboration between Abucon/Solid Metal Projects and ThermusP. The pilot plant's capacity will be 100 kg sewage sludge ash per hour. Piloting (TRL6) will commence in summer 2026.
For TRL6, a new consortium is underway. This will be published when settled.
